Virtual Production & LED Wall Studio: Complete Guide
Did viewers of The Mandalorian know the space scenes were actually filmed in front of an LED wall? Virtual production is fundamentally changing the film and advertising industry. What's the situation in Istanbul?
Virtual production is the technology that enables shooting against a dynamic backdrop created by giant LED screens, rather than travelling to physical locations. Also known as a 'volume studio', this system eliminates real location costs in film, TV, advertising and music video production while allowing visual elements to be controlled at the moment of shooting. In Istanbul, this technology has been entering active use since 2024–2025.
How Does an LED Volume Studio Work?
Giant LED panels (typically 10–20 metres wide, 4–6 metres high) are arranged in a semicircle or full circle. 3D rendered background imagery is projected onto the panels. The camera works synchronised with Unreal Engine or a similar real-time render engine — as the camera moves, the background changes dynamically according to the perspective angle. This produces convincingly real-location footage. Post-production greenscreen compositing needs are minimised.
The Advantages of Virtual Production
Location and logistics costs are eliminated: foreign cities, outer space, historical periods, dangerous environments — all can be produced in the studio. In-camera VFX: Effects are visible during shooting; actors react as though in a real environment. Independence from weather: Shoot day comes fully under control. Fast set changes: LED content can be swapped in minutes to present different location visuals. Against this, high initial cost (LED installation, render infrastructure) is a barrier for smaller-budget projects.
The Situation in Turkey and Istanbul
Several LED volume studios have become active in Istanbul from 2024–2025 onwards. Usage in ad films, TV drama productions and music videos is growing. International production companies are beginning to prefer Istanbul for international projects, combining Turkey's cost-competitive technical talent with LED volume technology. PAM İstanbul is in active partnership with studios offering this infrastructure.

PAM İstanbul's Approach to Technology
PAM İstanbul correctly matches virtual production technology to budget and project requirements. Whether to use LED volume, greenscreen or a real location for each project is recommended based on technical and cost analysis. Excessively expensive technology is not appropriate for every project — but in the right project, it produces transformative results.
