What Is Ghost Mannequin Photography?
Ghost mannequin — also called "invisible mannequin" — is a post-production technique that makes a garment appear as though it's being worn by a real body, while removing the mannequin entirely from the final image. The result: a three-dimensional, naturally shaped product image that doesn't look flattened on a hanger or collapsed on a flat surface.
In standard flat-lay photography the fabric lies on the ground; on a hanger the garment remains two-dimensional. In ghost mannequin photography the piece actually looks worn — because it was worn. The garment is photographed on a mannequin first, then additional shots capture interior details, and finally these frames are composited in post-production with the mannequin digitally removed.
Which Products Need Ghost Mannequin?
Ghost mannequin is essentially mandatory for these categories:
- Shirts and blouses: To show collar construction, cuff detail, and shoulder seams clearly.
- Trousers and shorts: Waistband and hem details read poorly on a flat surface.
- Dresses and jumpsuits: Maintaining the integrity of the silhouette is critical.
- Lingerie and swimwear: Without a body form, the garment's actual cut is unreadable.
- Jackets and coats: Shoulder structure, lapel roll, and hem fall all require a body beneath.
- Activewear: Stretch fabrics need a body to show how they actually perform.
Accessories, footwear, and bags generally don't require ghost mannequin — they hold their form on their own. But shaped textile products like socks and gloves benefit from the technique.
The 3-Shot Method: Behind the Scenes
A professional ghost mannequin shoot requires multiple frames. The most widely used approach — the 3-shot method — works like this:
- Shot 1 — Exterior: The garment is photographed on the mannequin, front and back.
- Shot 2 — Interior: The mannequin is removed (or the garment reversed) to reveal the neck, label, and size information.
- Shot 3 — Detail: Close-up shots as needed — buttons, stitching, fabric texture, print.
These frames are composited in Adobe Photoshop using masking and layering techniques. What separates good results from great ones isn't only the shooting — it's the attention and experience applied in post-production.
Retouching: More Than Just Removing a Mannequin
Once the mannequin is digitally removed, the work isn't done. Professional ghost mannequin retouching involves:
- Fill work on interior voids (neckline, armholes) so the opening looks natural against the background
- Fabric wrinkle correction — removing creases introduced by the mannequin
- Color consistency: white balance and brightness normalization across multiple products from the same shoot
- Background cleanup: pure white (#FFFFFF) or light grey platform output
- Cropping to the correct pixel dimensions for each e-commerce platform
