Why Production Houses Can't Ignore AI in 2026
AI has moved from "interesting experiment" to "production necessity" in 18 months. At PAM Istanbul, we've integrated AI into every phase of our commercial film workflow — pre-production, shoot, and post. Here's what actually works, and what's still hype.
Pre-Production: Where AI Saves the Most Time
Midjourney v7 / Flux: We use these daily for moodboards. A brief that once took 2 days of reference hunting now takes 2 hours. Client approval cycles shortened by 40%. Midjourney v7's Draft Mode outputs fast enough for rapid iteration. ChatGPT / Claude: Script structuring and shot list generation. Not final scripts — but the skeleton. Saves 3-4 hours per brief. ElevenLabs: V/O temp tracks for animatics. Directors now present fully voiced concepts, not silent cuts.
AI Video Generation: What's Production-Ready?
Runway Gen-4 (paid): Our primary tool for AI video generation. Handles 5-10 second scenes with consistent characters and coherent lighting. We use it for: product shots, abstract sequences, b-roll filler. Not ready for: full dialogue scenes, complex motion. Sora (OpenAI): Most cinematic output we've seen — but still unpredictable. Use for hero shots where you have time to iterate. Kling AI Elite: Exceptional motion quality for people and products. Best at: lifestyle shots, packshot-adjacent clips. Veo 3 (Google): Native audio generation is groundbreaking for social content. Still limited resolution for broadcast.
Post-Production AI Tools
Adobe Firefly / Photoshop AI: Client-approved background replacement and product composition. The licensing clarity (commercially safe content) matters as much as quality for brand work. Topaz Video AI: Upscaling AI-generated content from 720p to 4K for broadcast. Essential when Runway or Kling cap at 1080p. Descript / CapCut AI: Rough cut assembly and subtitle generation. Not final edit — but dramatically speeds up review rounds.
Our Actual Workflow in 2026
Brief → AI moodboard (Midjourney) → AI animatic with V/O (ElevenLabs + Runway) → client approval → live shoot (where needed) → AI enhancement in post (Firefly, Topaz) → delivery. AI has reduced average production time from 6 weeks to 3.5 weeks on mid-size campaigns. Cost impact: roughly 25-30% reduction on pre-production and motion work.
What AI Still Can't Do in Commercial Film
Authentic human emotion. Brand-specific talent. Location-based narrative (cities, real spaces). Legal-safe faces for beauty/pharma. Consistent brand ambassador portrayals across 12 months of content. The production house isn't replaced — its role shifts toward AI direction, quality control, and the irreplaceable live elements.
Production-Grade vs. Content-Grade AI
Not all AI output is equal. Content-grade (social, digital): AI alone is often sufficient. Production-grade (TVC, broadcast, cinema): AI is a tool within a professional workflow. Knowing which grade you need — and which AI supports it — is where production expertise matters.
